50 Biblical Affirmations to Speak Over Yourself

elliegrace0807

If you've read this post, you'll know I'm not a big fan of the self love movement. Our world creates a selfish culture, where our focus is "me me me", instead of loving God and loving people, like we are commanded to in Scripture. This worldly self love doesn't fulfill us or satisfy us, but only masks the exhaustion, burnout, and hurt. Face masks and spa days and journaling are not the true solutions to our problems, although they can offer temporary relief.

The root problem, I believe, is not knowing and believing our true identity. We aren't sure of our worth, so we do things that make us feel like we have more value, like we're put together and therefore worth something. We try to fill a hole in our heart where we don't feel loved by loving ourselves, but the reality is, that can't satisfy us either. We are only human, just like all of the people who hurt us or didn't meet our expectations, and we are not even enough to fulfill ourselves.

You know who is?

God.

Our Creator.

God is love, friends, and He loves us more than anything else in the world. He died for us in the most brutal way, because He declared that we were worth it. He sees us as worth dying for, and Jesus hung there on the cross so that we could put on a new identity, one bought with blood and eternally secure.

This isn't just some feel good identity either. It's more than "I am powerful" or "I am beautiful" or "I am capable". This identity is a weapon, a shield against the enemy who tries to get us to doubt who we are and in turn doubt who God is. The devil wants us to question our worth so that we are less of a threat, so that we don't stand in and walk in the authority and grace that God has invited us to. Our identity helps us to stand firm on the truth we find in Scripture, guarding our minds against the lies we hear all the time, and is a gift from God. Jesus paid for it with His life.

However, it's not always easy to believe in or walk in the identity that God has spoken over us. We easily fall into lies about our worth, about what defines us, and it can be hard to get out of that rut when we feel like the whole world is telling us to stay there. It's a difficult battle, but the things that seem to defeat us have NOT defeated God, so we can claim that victory in Him and learn to walk in our God-given identity.

Proverbs 18:21 says that the tongue has the power of life and death, and that includes the words we speak over ourselves. It is far too easy to look in the mirror and criticize ourselves, from the way our hair looks to our smile to the shape of our body. We complain about our personality, our laugh, our quirks. We feel defined by our mistakes or our flaws or the difficult seasons we walk through. And we settle on these things. We build pathways in our mind and lean into the belief that we aren't enough. We believe the lies that constantly circulate in our brains.

We can stop the spiral of speaking death over ourselves, though. We can choose to speak life and biblical truth over ourselves, building our confidence and our peace, learning to live for God instead of man. Our joy will be renewed and the devil will tremble because we are embracing the identity and authority and forgiveness that our God is inviting us to walk in. The enemy wouldn't try to break down our identity if there wasn't value and power in it, so it's something we must protect.

It starts by speaking Scripture and biblical affirmations over ourselves. It starts with reminding ourselves of who God says we are and refreshing our mind with it regularly. We have to get in the habit of saying the truth out loud and denying the lies that threaten to take root in our brains.

So today, I want to equip you with 50 biblical affirmations to declare every day. Each morning as you get ready or night as you prepare to go to bed, say these out loud, and watch as the Lord transforms your heart. The first time I did this, chills covered my body and I was moved to tears because of how kind my God is to see me this way, and that I get to see myself this way too. There is power in our identity and we get to choose to walk in it. We can rewire our brains to believe it.

If this list seems overwhelming to you, pick a few and write them on sticky notes. Put them in your car, by your bed or mirror and practice saying them. Slowly but surely, the truth will settle in, and you'll get to experience the joy and transformation that the Lord wants to walk you through.

Both the Almighty God and the devil wouldn't be coming after you if there wasn't something special inside of you, so remember that you are worthy and so very loved.
